2010 chevrolet traverse review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Excellent choice for hauling a family. introductionchevy traverse is a large crossover suv. Benefitting from a strong unit-body structure, it makes big, clunky, truck-based suvs practically obsolete, at least when it comes to moving people and cargo. It handles more like a family sedan than like a big suv. The steering is direct and responsive, if light, and the brakes are easy to modulate. The ride is comfortable and much more stable than that of large suvs, which can often bound and lean. The traverse is large, though, so it can be bulky in parking lot and parallel parking maneuvers. power is more than adequate. The traverse comes with a 3. 6-liter v6 that moves it ably from a stop and provides decent passing punch. It makes 281 horsepower, or 288 with the available dual exhaust system. The traverse comes standard with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy numbers are better than those of most truck-type suvs, but they're less than for the average family car. Given the traverse's spacious interior and eight-passenger capacity, the fuel economy is quite good. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to open up a generous cargo area. Even with all the seats up, there is enough room behind the third row for a week's worth of groceries, and an available power liftgate makes it easy to access those groceries. the controls are easy to reach and operate. The headlights start next to the grille and wrap around the front fenders. Horizontal fog lights mirror the headlights about six inches lower. A black air dam below the grille gives the front end a dark lower face. A peak at the center of the hood continues down through the grille and fascia, adding a touch of character. from the side, the traverse appears to have short overhangs for an suv. The window line rises to the rear and that angle increases at the rear windows. A character line is located about a third of the way up each door, and the black front fascia is picked up along the sides by black plastic over the rocker panels. Large wheels and tires keep everything in proportion. Up top, the traverse has black roof rails and an available two-panel sunroof with a fixed rear panel and an opening front panel. at the rear, the traverse features dark tailgate glass that dips down toward the center. Not only does it add an element of safety, helping avoid the tragic mistake of backing over a child, it also proves to be highly useful in everyday parking situations, making maneuvering in tight quarters easier and quicker. up front, the driver is surrounded by an attractively designed dashboard that has nice graining but uses more hard plastics than customers might expect for a vehicle in this price range. The instrument cluster has two deep-set pods with electroluminescent gauges on a black background. It's easy to read and never washes out in bright sunlight. the center stack features a navigation screen or the radio, plus the climate controls. With its long wheelbase and heavy-duty construction, the yukon xl is a highly stable platform for towing while offering the interior cargo advantages of a full-size suv. There are many vehicles that seat seven people without taking up so much space to do it, but few quite so comfortably, nor with so much room left over for cargo. the optional leather seats are wonderfully comfortable for long distances. The driver sits way up high and feels like he or she is master or mistress of his or her domain. The pedals adjust for long or short legs. The instruments and gauges are stylish. They share styling but differ in some details. For example, the yukon xl has a cleaner air intake below the bumper than the suburban, a different shape for the headlights, and the grille is not split. while very large in size, the yukon xl looks smooth, if not sleek. It isn't edgy like the cadillac escalade is. There's not a lot of flashy chrome and the side moldings and door handles are body colored. the running boards are integrated and unobtrusive, extending no farther than necessary, with a black grippy coating. The tinted glass behind the c-pillar is expansive, and looks nice. The front end has a clean appearance, with beefy block-like headlamps over a front bumper fascia. All the panel tolerances are a tight fit. It's nice to see that gm can produce this kind of quality. the rear window opens separately, which is convenient. The liftgate is aluminum, however, which makes opening and closing it manually a bit easier. interiorthe yukon xl is comfortable for long tows or major outings. It's a wonderful feeling to drive down the highway in one of these, riding high with all the comforts, including the optional bose sound system. The seats are comfortable and easy to adjust. Like most large suvs, the front row has plenty of head and leg room. the instrument panel and center stack are elegant and worthy of a higher-end vehicle. The denali model is richer still, with a wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel and darker wood trim than the other models. we found the touch-screen radio/navigation system easy to use, much easier to operate than in so many cars, mercedes, for example. We set the radio stations we liked and could quickly switch from favorite xm to am to fm stations with the push of a single button; many vehicles require switching bands, then switching stations. This ease of operation makes daily driving more enjoyable. the switchgear is simple, and the instrumentation is clean. The console is huge, with a deep storage box and a tray on top. The glovebox is large. Two cupholders are provided in a removable tray forward of the console and they work very well. There's another cupholder in each door pocket. A slot in the dash just left of the turn signal is perfect for coins or toll-road tickets. The pedals are adjustable, to accommodate short and tall drivers with the press of a button. the rearview camera is useful and improves safety, so we strongly recommend this option. This makes parallel parking much faster and much easier, and it helps when maneuvering in parking structures and other tight locations. The camera works well at night, benefiting from the reverse lights: one night we had to back up a narrow winding driveway squeezed by trees, and it could only be done by using the monitor. Though the same width, the yukon xl is about 20 inches longer than the yukon; it's the same length as its near twin, the chevy suburban, measuring 18 1/2 feet. the suburban and yukon xl are familiar vehicles on the road. They share styling but differ in some details. For example, the yukon xl has a cleaner air intake below the bumper than the suburban, a different shape for the headlights, and the grille is not split. while very large in size, the yukon xl looks smooth, if not sleek. It isn't edgy like the cadillac escalade is. There's not a lot of flashy chrome and the side moldings and door handles are body colored. the running boards are integrated and unobtrusive, extending no farther than necessary, with a black grippy coating. The tinted glass behind the c-pillar is expansive, and looks nice. The front end has a clean appearance, with beefy block-like headlamps over a front bumper fascia. All the panel tolerances are a tight fit. It's nice to see that gm can produce this kind of quality. the rear window opens separately, which is convenient. The liftgate is aluminum, however, which makes opening and closing it manually a bit easier. interiorthe yukon xl is comfortable for long tows or major outings. It's a wonderful feeling to drive down the highway in one of these, riding high with all the comforts, including the optional bose sound system. The seats are comfortable and easy to adjust. Like most large suvs, the front row has plenty of head and leg room. the instrument panel and center stack are elegant and worthy of a higher-end vehicle. The denali model is richer still, with a wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel and darker wood trim than the other models. we found the touch-screen radio/navigation system easy to use, much easier to operate than in so many cars, mercedes, for example. We set the radio stations we liked and could quickly switch from favorite xm to am to fm stations with the push of a single button; many vehicles require switching bands, then switching stations. This ease of operation makes daily driving more enjoyable. the switchgear is simple, and the instrumentation is clean. The console is huge, with a deep storage box and a tray on top. The glovebox is large. Two cupholders are provided in a removable tray forward of the console and they work very well. There's another cupholder in each door pocket. A slot in the dash just left of the turn signal is perfect for coins or toll-road tickets. The pedals are adjustable, to accommodate short and tall drivers with the press of a button. the rearview camera is useful and improves safety, so we strongly recommend this option. This makes parallel parking much faster and much easier, and it helps when maneuvering in parking structures and other tight locations. The camera works well at night, benefiting from the reverse lights: one night we had to back up a narrow winding driveway squeezed by trees, and it could only be done by using the monitor.
